Blommer Science Library

The Blommer Science Library is located on the third floor of Reiss Science Building and houses volumes on science, computer science, and math, as the second oldest library on Campus.

History

The Blommer Science Library was named after Henry Blommer (C'26) and opened in 1962. The library is currently located on the third floor of Reiss and contains over 66,000 books and periodicals related to science.1

The University has considered relocating and closing Blommer Library multiple times. In 1985, a University committee drafted a proposal to move the Blommer Library to a better location. University Librarian Joseph Jeffs stated, "There's no question that we need a new science library." This transition would include expanding the 60,000 volumes to more than 200,000 volumes.2

In 2019, the University announced that the library would be closed in a year and all its materials relocated to Lauinger Library by June 2020. This was part of the renovations set for Reiss. In response, students began a petition to "Keep Blommer Science Library Open Indefinitely."3 Due to Covid-19 and other administrative issues, Blommer did not relocate and continues to operate today.
