George Carr Merrick was a graduate of Georgetown University, a lawyer, judge, and farmer. He spent four years at Georgetown and graduated in 1855, having studied poetry.
Merrick was born in 1839 in Charles County, Maryland to William D. Merrick. Two of his siblings, William M. and Richard Thomas Merrick, were also Georgetown alumni. George Merrick was appointed as state attorney of Maryland in 1869 upon the death of the previous office holder and was elected to the position in 1873. A Republican, he was elected to represent Prince George's County in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1877.1
