The Georgetown University Farmers' Market operates on campus in the fall and spring, offering students the opportunity to buy fresh food from local vendors.
History
While various farmers' markets have been held in Georgetown and surrounding neighborhoods, no farmers' market was held on campus consistently until the Georgetown University Farmers' Market opened in 2011.
The Farmers' Market launched on April 27, 2011 in Healy Circle.1 The project was co-founded by a pair of students, Breanna Donald (NHS '12) and Melissa Gadsden (NHS '12), and was supported by a ReImagine Georgetown grant2. Organic produce and cooking demonstrations were highlights of the inaugural farmers' market3. The market soon outgrew Healy Circle and its next location, Copley Lawn, eventually settling in Red Square in 20144. The Farmers' Market remains a staple in Red Square during the fall and spring and is widely popular among students.
Offerings
The Farmers' Market runs every Wednesday in September, October, March, and April5. It features offerings from almost 30 local vendors, who sell products ranging from kombucha to pastries. Special Georgetown favorites include Timber, a fresh pizza vendor, Jin Lan, which sells authentic Chinese dumplings, as well as other frequent vendors such as DMV Empanadas and Yoga in a Bowl. The Farmers' Market is also a great venue for other student clubs to fundraise, including Georgetown Bubble's bubble tea sales, and Georgtown REUSE, which sells used clothes for discounted prices to reduce clothing waste.
The Farmers' Market often partners with other student organizations for special events. It partnered with Georgetown Program Board (GPB) for its annual Healy Howl to provide refreshments in their "Night of Thrills," Night Market.
In 2023, the Farmers' Market also hosted the Holiday Market, featuring special holiday-themed decorations, as well as food, jewelry, and clothing sales.
