James William Hamilton Lovejoy (December 15, 1824 – March 18, 1901) was a professor in the Medical School from 1851 to 1854 and again from 1880 to 1898, and Medical School Dean from 1883 to 1898.
Born in Washington, D.C., he graduated from Columbian College (later George Washington University) with a bachelor of arts degree in 1844 and a masters of arts degree in 1847 and then graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1851. Returning to D.C., he entered private practice and was appointed professor of chemistry when the Georgetown Medical Department opened in 1851. 1He resigned in 1854 but rejoined the faculty in 1880, teaching materia medica and later the theory and practice of medicine. Between 1883 and 1898 he served as Dean.
He was one of the founders of the National Garfield Hospital and was elected as a director of Children’s Hospital.
