Francis Ashbury Ashford

Francis Ashbury Ashford (September 19, 1841-May 19, 1883) was one of the founders of Children’s Hospital for the District of Columbia (now Children's National Hospital) and Dean of the Georgetown University Medical School, 1877-1883.1

Born in Fairfax County, Virginia, Ashford served in the Confederate army during the Civil War and graduated from the Medical Department of Columbian College (later George Washington University) in 1867. In 1877, he was elected to the chair of surgery at the Georgetown University Medical School and made Dean of the faculty, a position he held until his death.
