Georgetown University Club Boxing

Georgetown University Club Boxing is Georgetown's student boxing team. The school no longer has an official boxing team, so Club Boxing provides a space for both experienced and first-time boxers to participate in the sport. The club holds an annual boxing showcase on campus with other boxing clubs in the DC area.

History

Georgetown briefly had a boxing team in the 30s as well as an Intra-Mural Boxing Tournament. A Hoya article from 1930 reported that "Georgetown students have developed a great interest in boxing and the large turnout of boxers that entered the tournament is an indication of the hold that collegiate boxing has gained on the student body."1

Georgetown University Club Boxing was officially established in 2007, starting with only about five members1. The club grew steadily in the following years and had about 40 active members by 20132. Club Boxing hosted its first annual boxing showcase the same year, an event that has since become a Georgetown tradition3. The 2013 showcase featured fighters from the U.K.4; showcases since then have consistently included competitors from other DC-area schools.

In 2014, six Club Boxing fighters traveled to Portsmouth, U.K., to represent the US in a boxing showcase against U.K. fighters5. Though the club was unable to hold its annual showcase at Georgetown in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the showcase returned in April 20226

Activities

Club Boxing holds several practices each week and estimated in 2022 that about 60-65 students attend regularly7. The club's showcase is an annual highlight, offering some members an opportunity to compete in front of the Georgetown community. The showcase has been held in various locations, including Harbin Patio and Healy Lawn8. Club Boxing also competes in various local events and a national competition9.
