Regents

Jesuit Administrators: 1919-1968

Regents were members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) appointed by the University President, with the approval of the Maryland Provincial, in Georgetown schools which did not have Jesuit Deans.

Functions of the Position of Regent

The Regents were liaisons between the University President and the school deans. They represented the school they were assigned to on the Board of Directors and acted as consultants to the President for the affairs of those schools. Additionally they served as advisors to the Deans.1 They were not members of the Board Of Regents.

History of the Position of Regent

The position appears to have been created in 1919, around the time the School of Foreign Service was founded. It is first mentioned in a published source in the November 1919 issue of the Georgetown College Journal. This identifies Edmund A. Walsh, S.J., as Regent for the School of Foreign Service and states that a Regent was part of the permanent administrative structure of the School.2 The position is mentioned for the last time in an article in the May 2, 1968 issue of The Hoya which describes Frank L. Fadner, S.J. as “the bushy browed regent of the School of Languages and Linguistics.”3
