Hakeem Jeffries (MPP 1994) is an alumnus of Georgetown University, a lawyer, and politician. A Democrat, he currently serves as the United States Representative for New York's 8th District and as the House Minority Leader.
Jeffries attended the Georgetown Public Policy Institute (now the McCourt School of Public Policy) and received a Master of Public Policy degree in 1994. During his time at Georgetown, Jeffries wrote several articles for The Hoya.1
Jeffries was first elected to the House in 2012.2 As of the 116th Congress (2019 - 2021), he was one of 28 Georgetown alumni currently serving in Congress. Jeffries delivered the McCourt School's Whittington Lecture in 2021.3, 4
Jeffries was unanimously elected as the House Democratic Leader in November 20225, succeeding Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
